A baby girl that was abandoned in a Columbian forest just hours after birth is now thriving thanks to the help from a special police officer. While picking oranges, a local woman, Edinora Jimenez, heard cries coming from the bushes that prompted her to contact local authorities. Office Luisa Fernanda Urrea of La Marina, Colombia first thought the noises were coming from a cat. She soon realized that the cries were from the newborn who was abandoned.
The baby still had her umbilical cord attached, had several lacerations on her body, was clearly hungry and was suffering from the effects of hypothermia. A brand-new mother herself, Urrea knew that she had to act immediately to save the baby while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Urrea breastfed the starving infant, holding her tiny, cold body close to her. What Urrea did for the baby has people around the world praising Urrea for her selfless, heroic act. Doctors say that without the prompt care from Urrea, the baby may have died while waiting for help to arrive. The baby still had her umbilical cord attached and authorities are still unsure of the name of her birth mother.
She is being sought after and will possibly be charged with child neglect and attempted murder. The Colombian Family Welfare Institute currently is caring for the child and is hoping to place her in an adoptive home soon. Though she had a rough beginning to her life, doctors believe that she will grow healthy and strong, thanks to the incredible gift that Urrea gave the baby.
