The recent news about the Zika virus possibly spreading the the United States has prompted large pharmaceutical companies to produce vaccines against the disease, but there are some who are hesitant to release a vaccine until further information about the virus is known.
When the virus first made its appearance in the world, there were no vaccines available. Today, there are about 30, but it’s a disease that’s still running rampant.
Two of the vaccines available are in the process of being tested on people. The likelihood of the vaccines being available to people is still a few years away. If the larger pharmacy companies take their time in getting in on the vaccine, then it could be longer than a few years before anyone sees assistance for the virus.
One of the vaccines being tested involves GlaxoSmithKline. The company has partnered with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, but even though there are two large companies involved, it is unlikely that they will get on board in racing to a new vaccine.
There have been several viruses that have reared their heads in the recent past, such as SARS and West Nile. This virus seems like it’s taking a back burner to some of the other diseases that companies are trying to fight.
