Almost everyone in the world owns a cell phone, and with the new and exciting features many of them include, it’s not hard to see why. But, since we are consumed by the useful features cell phones provide, we often overlook some of the dangers that are also associated with them. Olivia Retter, a 9-year-old girl from Hertfordshire, England, recently experienced one of those dangers first hand. Retter recently fell asleep on top of her cell phone, and the outcome was excruciating.
According to The Mirror, Retter’s mother, Karly, said that she came into her room in the middle of the night complaining that her leg hurt. She said that she thought her daughter was just being dramatic and sent her back to her room. Karly also noted that, although her daughter has her own cell phone, she is not allowed to use it at night. On this particular night, Karly believes that her daughter snuck the phone into her room and fell asleep with it next to her leg.
When she finally noticed her daughter’s leg the next morning, she was stunned. Retter had what looked like an imprint of her phone on the side of her thigh. Doctors confirmed that she had sustained chemical burns from the phone case, which had a type of liquid glitter inside of it – although there didn’t appear to be a crack in the phone that would have allowed chemicals to leak out, there was no other explanation for the burns on Retter’s leg. The doctors were able to effectively treat the burns, but they believe that the scarring from them will be permanent. Karly is still quite shaken by the incident.
She said that she can’t even imagine what might have happened if her daughter was on the phone when the chemicals had leaked. She has reached out to the seller of the particular phone case and also posted photos of her daughter’s leg on Facebook as a warning to others. The post and photo have gone viral, reaching nearly 33,000 shares. Additionally, the phone case that caused the burns on Retter’s leg has been taken off the market, so no one else will be harmed by the dangerous chemicals inside of it.
