It is not unusual for people to run out of gas or lose their way while miles from nowhere. Be prepared in advance by creating an inexpensive, miniature survival kit. Take an empty medicine bottle and remove the label. Start gathering your emergency supplies.
Light Sources
For a quick source of light, get a small, two-inch flashlight. Grab a book of matches to start a fire or light a candle. Find waterproof matches in the sporting goods section where camping items are sold. Pick-up a miniature lighter as backup.
Health and Safety
One piece of candy can boost blood sugar on a long hike. Add a couple of packets of sanitary wipes, which might serve to cleanse a wound. Get a couple of small packages of antibiotic ointment or make your own. Cut a plastic straw into two-inch lengths. Seal one end by melting the plastic. Squeeze ointment into the straw and seal the other end.
In the first-aid section, get a couple of packaged fabric bandages. Include a couple of safety pins that might be used to fasten bandages, remove splinters or act as fishing hooks. Cut a one-square foot of aluminum foil. The foil can be used as a water container, make connections on battery ends to start a fire or use the foil in the sun like a mirror to signal for help.
Assemble the Kit
Neatly pack the assembled contents into the bottle. If you find that you have spare room, add a small pocket knife, a fishing hook and some line. Maybe add a couple of strips of duct tape, gauze or more candy.
