President Barack Obama has tried to do everything that he can to boost gender equality. Toys for Tots is a program that the President and the First Lady have supported the entire time that they have been in office.
The program launched in the 1940’s and members of the Marines collect donated toys and distribute them to children in need for Christmas. Obama has made no secret that he thinks that girls across the country should be encouraged to play sports and learn more about science.
He decided to change things up when sorting toys this year.
Most people would put basketballs and Legos in bins for boys and not girls. President Obama put items such as a t-ball set, Legos and sports items in the assigned girls bins because he said that he wants girls to play ball and that they would like those toys as well. Breaking down gender stereotypes is one issue that many people can agree on.
There has been problems with women making less than men do for the same jobs. Obama hopes that by allowing girls to play with toys that society sees as for boys only that he can make progress with this issue that has been around since the beginning of time.
