VIDEO: He Left An Egg In Vinegar For 48 Hours, When He Took It Out…OH MY GOSH!

A fun and classic experiment allows someone to transform a raw egg into a naked egg with interesting properties. How does someone make a naked egg and what can you do with it? Well, this experiment starts with a few basic items; 1 raw egg, 1 bottle of vinegar, and 1 glass large enough to hold the egg.

The first step begins with placing the egg inside the glass, the second step is to fill the glass with vinegar until the egg is completely covered/immersed, and the final step is to let the egg soak in the vinegar, undisturbed, for 48 hours. Within the 48 hour period the egg will be produce many bubbles.

After 2 days has passed, pour out the vinegar and remove the egg. Warning, the egg is going to look gross, but that’s part of this cool experiment. Notice that the shell is almost completely dissolved revealing a thin membrane that is keeping the contents of the egg intact. Gently rinse and peel any remaining shell fragments, this will reveal a naked, rubber egg.

What can you do with the rubber egg? You can gently bounce the egg on a flat surface, and you can shine a flashlight through the now-translucent egg to produce an interesting effect.

How was this accomplished? The shell of an egg consists of calcium carbonate, when calcium carbonate comes into contact with an acetic acid – in this case vinegar, a chemical reaction is started and dissolves the egg’s shell. The bubbles produced from the chemical reaction is carbon dioxide.

This is an affordable and easy experiment that can be enjoyed by students, science enthusiast, and the entire family.
