United States President Donald Trump may have been a bit hypocritical this week when criticizing comedian Kathy Griffin in a tweet.
Trump tweeted that Griffin should be “ashamed of herself.” This followed Griffin posing in a photo holding up a fake and bloody Donald Trump severed head. Trump went on to say in his tweet that his 11 year old son Barron is having a “hard time” with the photo. Trump also mentioned the photo was “sick.”
Griffin, who typically hosts the New Year’s Eve special on CNN, was fired from her duties with the network after the photo was posted. CNN quickly released a tweet saying the 56 year old Griffin was terminated. A spokesperson for CNN said the pictures were “disgusting and offensive.” Griffin has since apologized for the incident.
The photo shoot with controversial photographer Tyler Shields led Griffin to say she “went too far.” Griffin could be facing an investigation from the Secret Service for her controversial photo shoot with photographer Tyler Shields.
The irony in this situation may be that Trump was not so quick to blast musician Ted Nugent for doing something very similiar 5 years ago. Nugent made a comment about potentially chopping off the heads of the Obama administration while at an NRA event in St. Louis in 2012. Nugent said “we need to ride off into the battlefield and chop their heads off in November.”
Trump wasn’t so hasty to react angrily when another President was threatened with potentially violent words. Trump tweeted about Nugent saying it “was obviously just a figure of speech.” He went on to use the tweet as a moment to say how much anger people have toward then President Barack Obama. Trump did the call the comments by Nugent “unfortunate.” Although he didn’t dismiss it like he did with the photo of Griffin.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was asked about the comparison between the Griffin and Nugent incident. Spicer only said he’d “have to look back and see what those statements are.”
