Brittani McIntire and her husband Ian have been preparing to welcome children into the world. When Brittani and Ian discovered that they were expecting, she was shocked – they hadn’t been trying to add to their family which already one set of twins. At her six week checkup, that shock increased. Brittani discovered that she was expecting twins AGAIN.
Sadly, the family’s excitement was quickly displaced by the tragic news that one of the twins, a boy that the couple had named Mason, was not growing normally. He had a hole in his heart as well as brain abnormalities that would be incompatible with life. According to Brittani, the only chance of survival for the child would be heart surgery after birth, which doctors would not perform because of his cerebral abnormalities.
At her next sonogram, Brittani, continuing to process the tragic news, was given a new image of her two children – and was shocked but soothed by what she found. In utero, baby Mason was holding the hand of his twin sister, Madilyn.
Brittani told reporters that the image brings her a great deal of comfort. Though it’s impossible to know at this point whether little Mason will survive her entire pregnancy, she takes comfort in the fact that if he has to pass, his sister will be by his side, perhaps even holding his hand. The inability to know if their baby will survive has strengthened Brittany and Ian’s resolve. She refers to her unborn son as a blessing, stating that if he survives the pregnancy, it will be a testimony to the abilities of God, and that if he does not, the family will be watched by a very special angel. In the meantime, the family simply chooses to remain faithful.
