Being a news personality is a highly visible job, and being a meteorologist is arguably more so, because one’s entire body is visible while standing in front of the weather map. That doesn’t mean, however, that a meteorologist should be a viable target for criticism over her looks and weight – especially if the added weight is a result of her pregnancy… This is the story of Katie Felinger.
Unfortunately, as Felinger’s baby bump increased, so did the number of comments on her shape. One viewer called the soon-to-be-mother to be a “sausage in casing,” while another declared that sticking her abdomen out was “disgusting.” While the CBS Philly meteorologist says she typically ignores suchcriticism, she finally felt she had had enough and wanted to stand up for mothers everywhere. She wrote an open letter to mothers, which read,
“You are beautiful. Even during the most uncomfortable – and let’s face it, less than glamorous – symptoms of pregnancy, what women go through to bring their precious children into the world is, simply put, AMAZING and you should be lauded.“
She ended the articulate letter with the following advice:
“In the meantime, let’s all remember the lesson Mom taught us – if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.”
But unfortunately this is the internet – a savage land where dickheads roam untamed and lawless, where trolls actually exist, and where everyone is protected by the impenetrable veil of anonymity that a computer screen gives us all. And so long as this is a freedom of speech deal, complete politeness will never be achieved here.
