Trae, Chandra and Jordan Berns were asleep in their crib 27 years ago when tragedy struck their little lives. Their house caught fire, and their mother was burned alive. The triplets survived, but they were left with severe injuries, third-degree burns covered 30 to 45 percent of their bodies. The doctors did not think that the triplets would survive.
However, the girls developed an incredible bond which helped them get through the terribly tough times. The girls had to undergo surgeries, skin grafts and physical therapy. They also had to deal with the emotional torment, which was brought on by the bullying they endured at school. And of course, on top of all of this, they were still having trouble coping with the sudden loss of their mother.
Fortunately, life got better for the girls as the years went by. Thanks to the advances in medical technology, and almighty science the triplets were able to get better skin treatments. Dr. Jill Waibel, who is a physician in South Florida, performed a laser procedure on the triplets, a treatment whivch greatly reduced the burn scars. This helped greatly improve the girls’ confidence and quality of life.
The triplets attended college together, and they refuse to allow themselves to be labeled “victims”. They are on a mission to help other burn survivors. Jordan Berns will be getting married soon and is excited to try on her wedding dress. She did not think she would ever be able to wear the dress of her dreams because of her scars. The girls have decided to go public with their story because they know that others will be able to benefit from the same procedure. It is estimated that 50,000 burn victims have undergone the same laser procedure since 2009.
