Look Up From Your Smartphone, See What You Could Be Missing

If you are an avid user of social media, you know just how ubiquitous it has become in the world. Almost everyone these days has Facebook and Twitter accounts that they use on a regular basis, and many people do most of their communicating online rather than in person. However, although many people would say that this is convenient and that is a good thing, this is quite dubious.

Because social media has provided such a convenient way to keep in touch with all of our friends, we don’t actually keep in touch with them in ways that would promote actual relationships being maintained. It is much easier to type words into a chat window than to pick up the phone, or to actually remove yourself from your house and have a face to face conversation with someone.

The following video has gone viral, and for good reason. It is a video that includes many images of people using social media, with the word poem “Look Up” in the background. The word poem was written and performed by Gary Turk, and he directed the video as well. Close to the beginning of the video, he says it all with the following line: “This media we call social is anything but, when we open our computers and it’s our doors we shut.”

Basically, the messages that the use of social media is ironically making people less social. People need to wake up and realize this so that relationships can be saved.
