There are a few positions that children sit in while they are on the floor that look comfortable for them, but they could they could have implications for the health of the child. One of the shapes that some children like to sit in looks like a “W.”
The legs are bent behind the body, and the knees are out front. While this might be comfortable for children, it can also pose a serious health risk. When children sit like this, according to some doctors, it can make the muscles in the legs and the hips tighter than usual and even shorter. It can affect the balance and coordination of the child as well.
There is also a possibility that the position could lead to hip dislocation as the child gets older. Some children might find that their knees and hips are getting sorer with time. This is a result of stretching out and bending tendons and bones in ways they shouldn’t be bent…
The weight is also hard to shift from one side to another, which can inhibit the development of trunk muscles and balance while standing. Parents should try to encourage children to sit in another position while on the floor, and it might just save a few trips to the doctor later in life!
