A woman in Georgia who took in a starving puppy and saved his life found that what actually happened was mutual. Struggling with depression and anxiety, the woman discovered that the little puppy, Rocky, has a sense for when she is on the edge of another bad episode and knows just what to do to bring her back.
When Rocky turned up on her great-grandmother’s doorstep, he was barely alive. At just five weeks old, he was riddled with worms, malnourished and covered in matted fur. The woman fed him, bathed him, combed him and brought him back to life. Little did she know he would, in his way, do something similar for her.
The woman was suffering through a difficult winter. She had sunk into serious bouts of depression and anxiety that made it impossible for her to sleep. She could barely interact with people.
What she found was that even before she was aware that she was sliding into another bad bout of depression or succumbing to an attack of anxiety, Rocky knew. He would go up to her, look into her eyes and sometimes touch her with his paw. He always let her know that he was there.
It might have helped that Rocky had fears of his own such as water and loud noises. Together, the two worked to heal themselves and one another and formed an unbreakable bond.
It is not just the woman who adores the dog. Her husband loves Rocky as well. In fact, she had photos made in her wedding dress with Rocky to show the world just how much the canine means to her.
This story proves that best friends and healing can come in many guises. It doesn’t even have to be a person; animals, too, can be there supporting their humans through thick and thin just like any other loved one.
