He Locks Himself In With A Battered Pit Bull, And What Does He Start To Eat?
Just as he was about to lock up Granite Hills Animal Care in Elberton, Georgia, Andy Mathis, DVM received a call that stopped him in his tracks. A concerned woman told him about a dog she had found alone on a country road, nearly starved. Instead of telling her to wait until morning, or find another vet, Dr. Mathis told her to bring the animal in and he would assess the situation.

When the good samaritan came in with a bone-thin gray pit bull, the good doctor felt conflicted. Before him was an anemic dog, starved nearly to death with a Very bad vaginal prolapse and to top that off she was cold – hypothermic. He wasn’t sure if she would survive, even with his help.

For guidance and support, Dr. Andy did the modern equivalent of offering the question up to the universe. He took the matter to other animal lovers of Facebook. There were two choices: He could try to save her, or release her from her pain by putting her dow then and there. Animal lovers responded not only that he must try to save her, but they gave her a name too. No matter what the outcome would be she needed a name because no dog should cross over the rainbow bridge nameless. So, without much more discussion, little Graycie Clair became the good doctor’s star patient.

Dr. Andy was able to save Graycie, but she had some obvious problems trusting people. When she began to get better, but was still having issues eating, Dr. Mathis joined her in the kennel for a breakfast date. As he proceeds to eat his own breakfast from a stainless steel dog dish like her own, he respects her space, and shows her that they can be together without a threat.

Watch Graycie Clair react to her mealtime visitor. Maybe sharing a meal would solve a lot of the world’s problems.

Graycie Calir was a small, hypothermic, gray pit bull. She wasn’t much more than a fur covered skeleton, and she had a badly prolapsed vagina when she was brought to Elberton, Georgia, veterinarian, Dr. Andy Mathis.

Dr. Andy had a difficult choice to make. He could try to help the little dog, or he could end her suffering. Despite some pretty tough odds, he took the advice of other animal lovers and helped her to heal.

Little Graycie did her part, she made a little improvement each day. As her weight increased and she began to eat better her anemia resolved. She was alert and becoming well, a miracle dog.

While there is still a great deal of time and patience to invest, Graycie is healing both physically and mentally. Until she is ready to find a forever home, Graycie is in some very compassionate, caring hands.
