Lexi Brown, a 12-year-old cancer patient who is suffering from sarcoma, has been spending a lot of time at the Mattel Children’s Hospital near UCLA in California. She was recently airlifted there after the cancer spread to her lungs. Brown’s hospital room happened to have a view of one of the frat houses on UCLA’s fraternity row.
One day she and her mom placed a sign in the window asking for pizza, but they had no idea that anyone would even see it. The fraternity brothers from Sigma Alpha Epsilon, who live across the street from the hospital, saw the sign in Brown’s room and decided to go over and visit. They not only brought the requested pizza, but they also brought some flowers and a guitar and played the young girl a few songs.
Brown’s mother, Lisa, was brought to tears by the kind gesture. But their kindness didn’t end there. The fraternity brothers continued to visit Brown in the hospital to play games with her and bring her gifts. They even arranged for the UCLA women’s tennis and football teams to visit her. One evening, Brown and her parents looked out the hospital room’s window and fond the biggest surprise of all.
Each year the SAE fraternity decorates their house for the holidays. This holiday season, the brothers decided to honor Brown in their decorations. They surprised the young cancer patient by putting her name in lights on the roof of their home. They also added a bunch of purple lights, since purple is Brown’s favorite color, and a flashing heart shape to show their support for Brown and her family.
The young girl has now returned home to continue to fight her battle with sarcoma, but the brothers of SAE plan to keep her name on their house. Brown and her family consider the fraternity brothers family, and SAE members from across the United States have started donating money to the Brown family to help pay for their medical costs.
