Amy, a girl who loves everything do-it-yourself (DIY for short) runs her own blog titled “Her Tool Belt” where she takes anything DIY and breaks it down into simple steps for her readers to master. She gets a real thrill when she is able to make something seemingly complicated work really well when she builds it or upgrades it, so she started the blog to be able to help other aspiring DIY-ers do building tasks on their own.

Most recently, Amy’s project was to build a planter box that she could put outside of her house to hold flowers and that would allow them to grow vibrantly. Unfortunately, she grew frustrated when she had tried to build one of these boxes in the past, because she had made one for her back porch and the flowers died from overexposure to the elements.

Regardless, Amy decided to put her mind to it again, and this time she attempted to build a planter box that she could put in front of a window on the front of her house. The result?….absolutely exquisite!

How Did She Do It?

Starting with the wood, Amy built herself a planter box that stood up straight and held its own weight. She pegged the wooden legs slightly into the ground so that the box would continue to support itself even during a harsh storm.

Then, she took a two-inch electric drill and drilled perfectly-formed circular holes all over the box for ventilation purposes. She put the holes about six inches apart, and this gave her space that the flowers could be put through as well.

After that, she loaded her newly-crafted planter with top-notch gardening soil, and she put peanut pellets into the back of the planter for filler material. Every day, she would water the plants until enough water filled the planter to leak out of the bottom holes she had drilled. In the planter, she mixed a variety of petunias in an attempt to give the flowers a pop of color pizzazz once they bloomed.

Weekly, she would fill the pot with new fertilizer in order to give the plants that extra boost of yummy plant food that they needed to grow big and tall. She also found that she had to spray her flowers with pesticides every so often in order to allow the flowers to reach their full potential. More often than not, those pesky bugs can destroy the potential that your plants have if you don’t stay on top of them.

The flowers were first planted and ready to go on April 13th. For the next five months (through September 29th, which was her last recorded picture post for the flowers) Amy nurtured and cared for her flowers as best as she knew how.

Like anything else, there were ups and downs to the growth of her flowers, but by the end the result was nothing short of extraordinary. So many flowers had popped out of the planter box that every single hole Amy had drilled had a flower coming through it, all the way up to the top of the box.

The flowers had multiplied so greatly that they now hung all the way to the ground. In fact, you couldn’t even see the planter box anymore! It looked like the flowers were part of a small bush!
