Colvina Jolin did not know that she had given birth until weeks after her daughter was born. Both mother and daughter almost lost their lives, but Colvina was grateful for the experience that brought her and her child together. She was 23 weeks pregnant, and it seemed as though everything was going fine.. Until one day, Colvina developed an intense headache.
She called her husband to tell him something was wrong, and then fainted. Colvina was rushed to the hospital and the doctors discovered that she had had a brain hemorrhage and she needed to be treated at another hospital that was 20 miles away. They stated that she only had a 10 percent chance of surviving. Colvina had surgery to stop the bleeding, however, she wasn’t out of the woods yet. And neither was her unborn baby.
The doctors were afraid that Colvina’s brain bleeding had affected blood flow to the womb, and on top of this she had gone into a coma after the surgery. The coma wold last three months… Even though she was in a coma, she seemed to still be aware of her pregnancy. Doctors stated that she would sometimes move her hand to touch her stomach. The doctors delivered the baby via C-section when Colvina was 29 weeks pregnant.
It is extremely rare for a mom to give birth while in a coma. In fact, Dr. Enyon, who delivered the baby, stated he had only seen it once in the 13 years of practicing medicine. The first few weeks of the baby girl’s life were rough, she only weighed three pounds at birth, had to be placed in the incubator shortly afterwards, and had to be revived twice.
Colvina stated that her daughter was the first thing she thought about after re-gaining consciousness some sixty days later. Maia will be celebrating her first birthday soon. Colvina is still recovering and receiving therapy, but she is walking again. She is also trying to re-gain her use of speech, she stated that she wants to be able to take care of her daughter – that is her biggest motivation.
