Convicted rapist Brock Turner was released from jail on September 2 after serving three months of a six-month sentence. He was expected to return to his home in Sugarcreek Township, Ohio, but displeased local residents protested outside the house, unhappy with having a sex offender as a neighbor.
The protesters, many of them armed, stood on the sidewalk near the Turner home, holding signs stating that rapists should be castrated. Other messages were written in chalk on the street, including “shoot your local rapist.” While the police were called, they decided to stay in the background as long as the protest remained peaceful.
The fire department eventually arrived to clean up the street. One person said they were very unhappy with having someone like Brock in the neighborhood. Another resident expressed disappointment by saying she had moved to that particular area due to its lack of sex offenders, and now that was going to change.
Turner was convicted in June of raping an unconscious woman he met at a campus party in January 2015. Judge Aaron Persky sentenced Turner to only six months in jail despite a recommended minimum two-year prison sentence in California. The former student athlete was also given three years of probation and will have to register as a sex offender wherever he chooses to live.
