Political commentator Bill Maher has written an essay explaining why the American people should take presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders seriously. He compared Sanders to Roosevelt in terms of reform, and emphasized the rules in politics have changed.
Maher wrote that Donald Trump was also a surprise as a leading candidate despite his penchant for negative behavior. He did note that younger voters relate to Trump because he presents authenticity along with his obnoxiousness, and Sanders has his own version of being real, namely his refusal to accept super PAC money.
Maher also pointed out that Sanders’ campaign is based on reviving the American dream where people who work hard should be able to attain a level of success. It is basically a “New Deal” for the 21st century that would put America on the same level of many European countries. People pay higher taxes there but enjoy benefits like a free college education and free health care.
Maher’s last point in the essay stated that Trump supporters have a great deal in common with those who back Sanders, but they are unable to acknowledge it in any respectful, politically correct way. It is clear that America has tired of partisanship and is ready to move forward with new ideas and fresh voices.
