Atheists Unveil Billboards in Denver: “The Only Wall We Need Is Between Church and State”

Scheduled to coincide with Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court, the Metro Denver Chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation have revealed a dozen billboards with the hopes of sending a clear statement. These billboards, displayed across the city, communicate a simple, powerful message: “The only wall we need is between church and state.”

Their intention behind the billboards, according to the director of the Denver Chapter, Claudette St. Pierre, is to let Colorado and Denver residents “know that there is an organization that will stand up and fight for the constitutional principle of the separation of church and state,”. He continued by adding that he feels there has never been a time in the history of the country where First Amendment rights have been more at risk.

Annie Laurie Gaylor, FFRF Co-President, views the nomination of Neil M. Gorsuch to the Supreme Court as a threat to secular government and individual rights and liberties due to his “natural law” philosophy based on a religious foundation. Since he is part of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (based in Denver), residents of Denver are especially familiar with Gorsuch’s judicial preferences.

The billboards will remain in place for the duration of April.
