Amrican Mayors and Governors Vow to Stick with Paris Accord

On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, drawing criticism from many world leaders.

In the announcement, Trump used Pittsburgh as reasoning and example for pulling out of the accord, saying “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”

However, Bill Peduto, the major of Pittsburg, responded to Trump on Twitter stating that “Clinton received 80% of the vote in Pittsburgh” and that Pittsburgh would stand with the rest of the world and support the Paris Accord.

Peduto isn’t the only one standing against the decision. So far, 10 governors and over 60 majors have openly pledged to stick to the Paris Accord and have been quite vocal in their defiance.

Jerry Brown, the governor of California said in a prepared statement, “California will resist this misguided and insane course of action, …”

The group of over 60 majors said they “will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement.”

The governors of California, New York, and Washington have also created the United States Climate Alliance to bring together states that are supporting the Paris Accord.

“While the President’s actions are a shameful rebuke to the work needed to protect our planet for our children and grandchildren, states have been and will continue to step up,” said Jay Inslee, governor of Washington.
